FAMILY-OWNED BAKERY IS SOWING THE SEEDS FOR COTSWOLD BEES

Huffkins Bakery has pledged to help protect the environment, while tantalising our taste buds this Summer.

The renowned Cotswolds bakery has developed a new wildflower cream tea & gin product to mark their Summer pledge. For every gift set sold, Huffkins will sow 1 square metre of pollinator friendly wildflower meadow.

This is the first stage of a long-term project to establish and maintain a nature-friendly wildflower meadow in collaboration with experts at Cotswold National Landscape and the Glorious Cotswold Grasslands project. The meadow is located at the historic Abbots Grange hotel in Broadway, Worcestershire (a sister company to Huffkins) and will be sown with seeds from established local wildflower meadows.

Customers are also invited to support the pledge, with a complimentary packet of these wildflower rich seeds included in every gift set. Recipients will be encouraged to plant the seeds in their garden or local public green space, to provide easily accessible pollen and nectar for butterflies and bees.

Joshua Taee, Managing Director of Huffkins, said: “Just 80 years ago, 40% of the Cotswolds was covered in wildflower-rich limestone grasslands. Tragically with agricultural expansion this type of habitat now covers less than 1.5% of the Cotswolds and many of the plants and animals that depend on these habitats have greatly declined. The seeds we sow will grow into pollinator friendly flowers that help bees, butterflies and other wildlife in our local area.”

The Wildflower Cream Tea & Gin Gift Set will include Huffkins’ newly developed recipe – lemon and poppyseed scones – alongside passionfruit curd, clotted cream and two mini-bottles of Cotswolds Gin Wildflower Spritz from the local distillery.

Taee continues: “Our craft bakers loved creating this new recipe to celebrate our pledge. I expected something delicious, but I was truly thrilled when they presented the recipe for lemon & poppy seed scones. It felt so relevant to what we are doing! Our handmade passionfruit curd and the wildflower gin spritz pair beautifully in this cream tea. We know this combination will be a hit with our customers this summer.”

The new lemon and poppyseed scones will also be available to enjoy at each of Huffkins eight bakery & tea room locations across the Cotswolds and London. The scones are handmade and freshly baked each morning in their Witney based craft bakery, using local flour from Shipton-under-Wychwood.
